עולם הכדורגל באבל. ריי ווילקינס, בעבר קפטן נבחרת אנגליה, הלך לעולמו בגיל 61 בלבד כתוצאה מהתקף לב. ביום רביעי הוא לקה בהתקף לב פתאומי ומאז נאבק על חייו בטיפול נמרץ בבית החולים. ווילקינס שיחק 84 פעמים בנבחרת אנגליה, היה הקפטן שלה עשר פעמים וכבש שלושה שערים. בשנים האחרונות בריאותו התערערה והוא נלחם בבעיות מעיים ועבר ניתוח לב פתוח.


וויליקנס היה מזוהה עם צ'לסי ואף היה חלק מהמועדון עד השנים האחרונות. בצ'לסי הוא עבד כעוזר מאמן עם לואיס פליפה סקולרי, חוס הידינק וקרלו אנצ'לוטי עד 2010 – למעשה הוא עבד כעוזר מנג'ר בצ'לסי מאז 1998 עד 2010. העבודה האחרונה שלו הייתה ב-2015 כעוזר מאמן באסטון וילה. בעונת 2014/15 אימן את נבחרת ירדן.


ווילקינס פרש מכדורגל ב-1997 אחרי ששיחק במדי צ'לסי, מנצ'סטר יונייטד, מילאן, פאריס סן ז'רמן, ריינג'רס, קריסטל פאלאס, קווינס פארק ריינג'רס ולייטון אוריינט. אשתו מסרה לכתבים שהוא נאבק על חייו עד לרגע האחרון.
